World-famous actor Robbie Coltrane, well-known for Harry Potter film series, died at the age of 72.
Representatives for Coltrane’s talent agency WME told the media that the actor died Friday at the Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland. No cause of death has been revealed.

Coltrane was widely known for starring in the “Harry Potter” franchise, based on the books by J.K. Rowling, alongside Daniel Radcliffe in the title role. He appeared in his first book-turned-film series in 2001 namely “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” He played more starring roles in the British series “Cracker,” “The Comic Strip Presents” and “Tutti Frutti.” He also starred in two James Bond movies “Goldeneye” and “The World is Not Enough.”
Radcliffe, Rowling, and others started paying tribute to Robbie Coltrane shortly after Coltrane’s death was announced. On Instagram, Radcliffe remembered Coltrane as “one of the funniest people I’ve met,”
On Twitter, Rowling said she will “never know anyone remotely like Robbie again.”
“He was an incredible talent, a complete one-off, and I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him,” the author tweeted on Friday.
Emma Watson said, "I have never met so kind a person as Robbie was".
Coltrane, né Anthony Robert McMillan, was born on March 30, 1950, in Glasgow, Scotland. He was the child of a general surgeon and pianist, and the actor’s affinity for arts and entertainment began in his childhood age.
Robbie Coltrane's passion for the arts brought him to the Glasgow Art School, where he studied drawing, painting and film. His early education also comprised art studies at the Moray House College of Education and Sport in Edinburgh.
In his early days of acting, he played role in the “Comic Strip Presents” series, which also featured Emma Thompson and Hugh Laurie. In the decade of the ’80s, Coltrane appeared in a number of film and television projects, including “Flash Gordon,” “Metal Mickey,” “Ghost Dance” and “A Kick Up the Eighties.”
Coltrane racked up additional credits in the sketch comedies like, “Alfresco” and “Laugh??? I Nearly Paid My Licence Fee.” In 1987, he appeared in the drama series “Tutti Frutti” as rocker Danny “Big Jazza” McGlone.
In 1992, Coltrane and Gemmell welcomed their son Spencer. Six years later, daughter Alice was born. Coltrane and Gemmell married in 1999.
He is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice, and their mother Rhona Gemmell.
